UAE's Innovative AR-Enabled QR Code for Medication
Revolutionizing Patient Access to Medication Information
The UAE will be the first country in the world to introduce AR-controlled medication loads with a QR code for paperless access to medication-related information in an innovative manner.
Patients can intuitively browse the medication information on the box by simply scanning a QR code. "In collaboration with Ferring Pharmaceuticals, MOHAP is showcasing an innovative initiative of adding QR codes to medication packages to enable patients to view and read medication information through AR technology," said Dr. Amin Hussein Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for the Health Regulation Sector, MOHAP.
"When scanning the QR code using artificial intelligence, a virtual assistant appears in a three-dimensional format and provides the patient with all information about the medication class," said Al Amiri.
The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) announced this new initiative on Day 3 of Arab Health 2022, which is set to be implemented in the first and second quarters of 2022. This initiative aims to improve treatment outcomes and avoid medication errors.
"The initiative uses new technologies like augmented reality and QR codes to facilitate patients' access to medications, ensuring their adherence to treatment plans. This aligns with the UAE government's directives to ensure their rights," added Al Amiri.
This new drive aims to enhance the ministry's competitiveness as a paperless digital health government entity and a sustainable model for developing services to ensure customer satisfaction.
The project plans to develop and implement modern technologies in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors by linking all medication information to an electronic source on the Internet. This will provide complete data about the medication after scanning the code using smartphones, thus facilitating access to medication information interactively.
