Telogen Effluvium and Dandruff: Causes, Connection & Treatment

Understanding Telogen Effluvium and Dandruff Connection

Many people notice concerning changes with telogen effluvium - some experience itching, while others observe hair loss alongside new dandruff. Patients often wonder: "Is my dandruff related to hair loss? Will treating dandruff help regrowth?"

During my own telogen effluvium experience, I was told my flakes resulted from dry scalp rather than traditional dandruff. Both conditions can cause white flakes and itching. In my case, scalp dryness came from topical hair loss treatments.

Telogen effluvium typically stems from medical conditions, stress, or bodily changes that shift hair cycles into shedding phase. Dandruff rarely causes telogen effluvium unless it's an allergic reaction or severe inflammation. Common triggers include illness, medications, pregnancy, or significant weight loss.

Scalp inflammation can cause itching, and significant shedding may inflame hair follicles. However, this inflammation usually follows shedding rather than causing it. While some studies link inflammatory scalp conditions to hair loss, these cases are rare and produce more severe symptoms than simple itching.

I found dandruff shampoo provided minor relief, likely due to anti-inflammatory properties. Comparing various shampoos, the dandruff version worked best for me, though it didn't resolve the underlying issue. Once telogen effluvium begins, focus on scalp health, manage inflammation, and wait for hair cycles to reset.

Another condition, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), involves reactions to androgens and may include dandruff, especially with excess sebum production.

In conclusion, while telogen effluvium may cause dry scalp or flaking, dandruff shampoo may help. The flaking is typically a symptom rather than cause, and usually resolves with the telogen effluvium. I now use dandruff shampoo occasionally to prevent inflammation.
