How to Remove Stretch Marks - Causes and Effective Treatments

stretch marks

Stretch marks (striae distensae) are scales or stripes that show up on the skin, which are typically red, pink, purple or white in color. Stretch marks are really scars that appear when the skin is stretched past its elastic limit. When this happens, it shows the skin cannot return to normal and it remains permanently scarred. They're especially common among young people as the skin is firmer and has a lower elastic limit. The most common areas they appear are the lower abdomen, lower back, thighs and knees.

Stretch marks tend to be red, bright pink or purple in color at first. This coloring happens because of the broken blood vessels in the skin's deeper layers. These marks generally fade into a silver or white shade as the blood vessels contract.

Some of the main causes of Stretch Marks

The skin has three layers - these being the hypodermis (deepest layer), the dermis (the center or middle layer) and the epidermis (external layer). Stretch marks are formed in the center part - the dermis. As your body grows normally, the connective fibers in the dermis gradually stretch. When there's rapid growth, these fibers can be stretched past their flexible limit and may end up damaged or even break. These are essentially scars formed from the inside out, which is why they can be hard to treat.

Natural Remedies

Stretch marks are a type of skin scarring related to pregnancy, obesity, puberty, and sometimes weight gain from working out and other physical activities. They form when the dermis - the middle layer of the skin that maintains shape and elasticity - is stretched further than it can handle. Connective tissues in the skin eventually break, disrupting collagen production and causing scarring. This scarring might be treatable through various stretch mark removal methods.

Stretch mark removal options include creams, dressings, and recommendations for proper diet and exercise. There's a wide variety of products available on the market for regular stretch mark removal. However, these methods fail to produce satisfactory results for some people, especially those with old, well-developed stretch mark scars. In these cases, more advanced medical treatment might be the only effective option.
