Hair Transplantation Surgery
Losing hair with age is veritably normal, but what if you start losing hair way before you should? This is when a phenomenon known as hair loss occurs. I was embarrassed by this until hair transplant surgery came along, and it was all I needed to restore my confidence.
After consulting the doctor, I learned that hair treatment is a surgical process where hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) are taken and placed in the balding area (the recipient site).
Types of Hair Treatment
Doctors stated that hair treatment can be of two types: slit grafts and micrografts. In the former, the doctor takes 2 to 10 hairs per graft, while in the latter, only 1 or 2 hairs per graft are planted based on the content demanded. This was when I decided which one would be beneficial for me.
Everyone needs a consultation before any kind of surgery, and I learned that candidates for a hair transplant include men with pattern baldness, women with thinning hair, and anyone who has lost hair due to burns or crown injuries. However, some should avoid this surgery, including women with widespread hair loss, people with limited donor hair, those prone to keloid scars, and individuals experiencing hair loss due to medications.
Hair Transplant Procedure
Hair treatment is a complicated procedure, but the doctor assured me it’s straightforward and involves several basic steps:
- The area for hair transplants does not require any removal of existing hair.
- Lacerations in the recipient area are made in a specific pattern to place the follicular unit grafts.
- Lower grafts are placed in the front hairline, while thicker grafts are placed behind. These lacerations will be visible immediately after the transplant but will heal within a few weeks.
Important Information About Hair Surgery
Here are some key points to know:
- Hair starts to grow 2-4 weeks after the transplant.
- Local anesthesia makes the procedure painless, allowing patients to be discharged the same day.
- This is not a nonsurgical hair restoration; it's a surgical procedure involving actual grafting.
- The results can vary significantly from person to person based on their natural hair.
- This procedure does not solve every problem, and individual cases differ.
- The number of grafts impacts the overall cost.
